Residential Counsellor, ESL Summer Program

Seasonal Contract

June 26th to August 25th, 2019

 

Appleby College’s Summer ESL Program welcomes students from around the world with diverse languages and backgrounds. Students attend Appleby College to improve their English language skills and experience Canada. The ESL Program is modeled after the Appleby College student experience, with a goal of providing summer students with a snapshot of what life as an Appleby College student is like. Students will live in residence, attend class, participate in extra-curricular activities, and off-campus excursions.  For more information regarding the program, please visit: Appleby College: Summer ESL Program

 

Residing on campus at Appleby College, the Residential Counsellor, ESL Summer Program is responsible for the supervision, well-being and safety of all students living in residence.  Reporting to the Program Director, ESL Summer Program, this position will support the ESL Summer Program’s mission to create an exceptional on-campus living experience.

 

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Supervise the residence to ensure the safety and well-being of each student
  • Actively participate in all aspects of the student’s day including activities, meal times, games, study hall, off-campus excursions, etc.  
  • Establish a good rapport with boarding students by being visible, approachable and friendly
  • Collaborate with the Program Director, ESL and the Assistant Director, Academic Summer Programs to establish positive communication and culture in the residence
  • Work closely with Program Director, ESL; assisting with the planning of activities and excursions
  • Follow all summer program policies and procedures including Appleby’s Mutual Respect policy
  • Participate in all required training related to Health and Safety
  • Attend off-campus trips with ESL and/or CEC students as required
  • Supervise and lead students during on campus activities and off-campus excursions
  • Follow disciplinary procedures for students according to established policies and protocols 
  • Accompany and/or drive students to various outings during the weekdays and excursions during the weekends using the Appleby vehicles
  • Attend all formal program events (Welcome meeting, Orientation, Graduation Ceremonies)
  • Assist in airport arrivals and departures of students
  • Capture photos and videos of students when members of the Communication Team are unavailable, e.g. evenings in residence, mealtimes, etc.

 

Knowledge, Skill and Technical Ability:

  • Post-Secondary Education at the University level, Bachelor of Education is an asset
  • Previous employment in a residential setting is an asset
  • Experience working with international students considered a strong asset
  • Strong communication skills, energetic and enthusiastic
  • Reliable, team-oriented, professional and creative and versatile in running group activities
  • Second or multiple languages an asset

 

Workplace Requirements and Conditions:

  • Location: Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, Ontario
  • Must reside on Campus for duration of employment
  • Evening and weekend residential duty
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License required to transport students using the Appleby College vans
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR – C is required
  • As a condition of employment, a criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening is required
