Residential Counsellor, Canadian Experience Camp

Seasonal Contract

June 26th to August 25th, 2019

 

Appleby College’s Canadian Experience Camp brings together youth groups from around the world to learn, play and live on our beautiful campus. Our summer program provides participants ages 9 to 14 with an opportunity to immerse themselves in a truly unique Canadian experience, while exploring the beauty and culture of Canada through field trips and excursions. Residing on campus at Appleby College, the Residential Counsellor, Canadian Experience Camp is responsible for the supervision, well-being and safety of all students living in residence.  Reporting to the Program Director, CEC Residential Academy, this position will support the CEC Summer Program’s mission to create an exceptional on-campus living experience.

 

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Supervise the residence to ensure the safety and well-being of each student
  • Actively participate in all aspects of the student’s day including activities, meal times, games, study hall, off-campus excursions, etc. 
  • Establish a good rapport with boarding students by being visible, approachable and friendly
  • Collaborate with the Program Director, CEC and the Assistant Director, Academic Summer Programs to establish positive communication and culture in the residence
  • Work closely with Program Director, CEC; assisting with the planning of activities and excursions
  • Follow all summer program policies and procedures including Appleby’s Mutual Respect policy
  • Participate in all required training related to Health and Safety
  • Attend off-campus trips with ESL and/or CEC students as required
  • Supervise and lead students during on campus activities and off-campus excursions
  • Follow disciplinary procedures for students according to established policies and protocols
  • Accompany and/or drive students to various outings during the weekdays and excursions during the weekends using the Appleby vehicles
  • Attend all formal program events (Welcome meeting, Orientation, Graduation Ceremonies)
  • Assist in airport arrivals and departures of students
  • Capture photos and videos of students when members of the Communication Team are unavailable, e.g. evenings in residence, mealtimes, etc.

Knowledge, Skill and Technical Ability:

  • Post-Secondary Education at the University level
  • Previous employment in a residential setting is an asset
  • Second or multiple languages are considered a strong asset
  • Work experience in an academic/camp settings and/or experience with international students considered an asset
  • Experience building relationships with peers, students, parents and staff
  • Versatile and dynamic in running group activities
  • Able to deal with emergencies calmly and effectively

 

Workplace Requirements and Conditions:

  • Location: Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, Ontario
  • Must reside on Campus for duration of employment
  • Evening and weekend residential duty
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License required to transport students using the Appleby College vans
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR – C is required
  • As a condition of employment, a criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening is required
