Reporting to the Executive Director, Advancement, the Manager, Leadership Giving & Appleby Fund is responsible for fundraising and donor relation activities that support the overall goals and objectives of philanthropy at Appleby College and has a focus on Leadership level gifts, Appleby Fund, and the school’s annual giving program.  The individual in this role will work together with other members of the Advancement Team to further support and develop a culture of philanthropy at the school, in support of both the College as well as The Appleby College Foundation. 


Specific Accountabilities for the Manager, Leadership Giving & Appleby Fund are;

  • Responsible for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of a portfolio of Leadership level donors to achieve fundraising goals
  • Work with the Executive Director, Advancement in the preparation of the annual business plan/budget for the annual fund and collaborate with fundraising colleagues, to develop the annual business plan for leadership giving revenue development, and communications strategy
  • Develop, manage and evaluate comprehensive individual giving fundraising strategies, to grow the Appleby Fund and improve retention
  • Manage the acquisition, renewal, and upgrade of mid-level donors by mail, email, phone and in person
  • Initiate regular contact with donors to deepen their commitment, identify propensity for increased support, and ensure excellent donor relations
  • Writes compelling and tailored solicitation communications for the portfolio; and develops copy for annual giving appeals
  • Plan, monitor and evaluate all activities related to the Appleby Fund and coordinates activities related to constituent relations and expands support to the Annual Fund
  • Work with the Executive Director, Advancement in the preparation of the annual business plan/budget for the annual fund and collaborate with fundraising colleagues, to develop the annual business plan for leadership giving revenue development, and communications strategy
  • Plan, monitor and evaluate all activities and metrics related to the assigned portfolio
  • Responsible for the annual Appleby Employee Giving Program, working alongside two employee champions
  • Responsible for recruiting and coordinating student and volunteer leadership efforts for the Graduating Class Gift and annual fundraising project
  • Work closely with the Appleby College Parents’ Association executive, marketing and communications, key faculty and other school leaders to increase awareness of and support for annual and monthly giving programs through presentations, workshops and regular features in School publications
  • Responsible for creating effective Annual Fund and special appeals in support of key fundraising priorities in collaboration with team leaders and consistent with the communications strategies
  • Co-project leader with the Director, Alumni Relations for annual reunion giving campaigns including communications strategy, marketing, and website development material, incorporating data analytics to assess potential and for accurate market segmentation
  • Identify annual donors with capacity for major/leadership gifts and works with colleagues to develop customized moves management strategies to increase support
  • Develop and implement with the Executive Director, Advancement and the Director, Alumni Relations, fundraising strategies to secure increased Alumni participation in the Annual Fund
  • Manage student philanthropy club, Kids 4 Kids, following the academic curriculum
  • Evaluate and assess the quality of current Annual Fund activities and suggest revisions as required
  • Participate in the cultivation and stewardship of donors at school events


Knowledge, Skills and Technical Ability:

  • A post-secondary degree, supported by an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated work experience, CFRE an asset
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive work experience in fundraising roles with direct experience in cultivation and solicitation of mid-level gifts
  • Experience with donor retention and acquisition strategies, implementing donor recognition & benefits
  • Impeccable verbal and written communication skills, experience in the development and production of fundraising materials across all media
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: thoughtful, donor-centric, ability to initiate, cultivate and maintain relationships easily
  • Highly detail oriented, results-driven and organized; superior project management skills
  • Strong analytical and data skills, including data segmentation techniques
  • Resourceful and independent while remaining comfortable working within the framework of an integrated and team-oriented environment
  • Highly professional, tactful, mature, conscientious; demonstrates high degree of personal integrity and adheres to the AFP Fundraising Code of Ethics and the Donor Bill of Rights
  • Advanced level PC skills (MS Office) and highly proficient user of at least one fundraising database (ex. Raiser’s Edge)
  • Adaptable to a flexible work schedule including select evenings and weekends
  • A team player, one who enjoys and thrives in a team environment and can manage multiple stakeholder groups concurrently
  • Superior project management, organization and planning skills; a track record of program development and implementation
  • An attention to detail and the ability to translate, communicate and implement big picture ideas and concepts succinctly and successfully within a variety of demographic groups.

  • Occasional evening/weekend work required
